A rich history
Australia’s rich history of gold mining dates back to the 1840s, with the first discoveries taking place across New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria. What followed, were a series of gold rushes across multiple states that saw migrant gold-seekers from around the world pour into the new colony.
Occurring simultaneously with other gold rushes around the world, Australia’s gold discoveries continued to make international headlines, including the finding of the largest alluvial gold nugget ever unearthed, the “Welcome Stranger”, near the small Victorian town of Moliagul.
Unearthing gold near what would soon become WA’s largest remote city, Kalgoorlie, in 1893 kicked off more than 3,000 kilometres of underground workings along reputedly the richest square mile on earth.
The rapid expansion of population forever transformed Australia’s identity, boosting the economy and paving the way for an industry which has significantly contributed to the growth and development of our nation.
Today, Australia is the world’s second largest gold producer, and five of the world’s 20 largest gold mines are in Australia, making the precious metal a vital part of both our country’s history and our future.
The Gold Industry Group’s National Gold Education Program reached more than 300 schools in 2020, delivering free, exclusive Gold Resources Kits and dynamic Gold Class Sessions across the country.
Despite COVID-19, 300 of the popular Gold Resources Kits were delivered to Primary and Secondary schools across all States and Territories, including to eight Shooting Stars sites, bringing gold education and career insights to thousands of students and teachers.
