Gold Industry Group extends its support for Shooting Stars

The Gold Industry Group (GIG) are thrilled to continue their support of Shooting Stars, empowering Aboriginal girls and women for a further three years, as a Major Partner of the program.

Supporting Shooting Stars since 2019, the GIG was instrumental to the expansion into the Goldfields region enabling the program to launch in Laverton empowering 26 participants across years 4 – 12.

Australian feature film shines light on pioneering gold rush cameleers

Following its success at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, acclaimed Australian drama The Furnace premiered on 30 November, shining a light on the ‘Afghan’ cameleers during the 1800s gold rushes at its premiere on 30 November.

The Furnace premieres as part of Lotterywest Films Perth Festival from 30 November – 6 December before being available at 110 cinemas around Australia from 10 December 2020.

Newmont’s COVID-19 fund assists Aboriginal community

Newmont has provided much-needed assistance to the South West Aboriginal Medical Services (SWAMS) as part of the company’s COVID-19 Global Community Support Fund.

Newmont’s support of SWAMS, through the company’s COVID-19 Global Community Support Fund, includes a donation of more than $30,000 and 300 flu immunisations for use in the community.

Indigenous role models sought for industry

A powerhouse panel of five leading industry businesswomen shared their insights on Indigenous Relations to a sold-out crowd at the Western Australian Mining Club’s luncheon last month, emphasizing the need for visible role models and a dedicated business council.

It was the Club’s first in-person event to be held since February 2020 due to the State’s COVID-19 restrictions, and was also live-streamed to interstate and international viewers unable to travel into WA.

Gold Fields support students' indigenous art project

In a collaboration between the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Gold Fields and the Museum of the Goldfields, East Kalgoorlie Primary School (EKPS) students embarked on a major art project with acclaimed local Aboriginal artists Edie Ulrich, Marjorie Stubbs and Danny Ulrich.

The project built students’ art and language skills, and relationships, allowing the passing of cultural knowledge between generations, and provided a taste of what it is like to have a career as an artist.

Newcrest honour Martu worker

A significant new symbol of the ever-growing and closer relationships between Newcrest Mining and the Martu people was celebrated at the company’s Telfer gold mine, with the official opening of the Kevin Fred Room.

Named after Martu elder Kevin Fred, it is the first of any building at Telfer named to honour an individual, and recognises the 16-year period in which Kevin worked tirelessly to strengthen relationships and trust between Newcrest and the Martu people.

To mark the 2019 NAIDOC celebrations, KCGM unveiled a haul truck tray designed and painted by local Aboriginal artist Jason Dimer.

The design reflects the connection between mining, people and the environment, and serves as a visual reminder of the importance of reconciliation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Gold supports Shooting Stars' new Laverton site

As Shooting Stars’ Premier Partner, the Gold Industry Group (GIG) is excited to announce the program’s expansion into Laverton, thanks to the combined support of the GIG and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

The program’s new trial site will be based at Laverton School and begin in Term 4 this year, making it the second site based in the Goldfields region and the eighth site in Western Australia overall.
