Australian feature film shines light on pioneering gold rush cameleers

Following its success at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, acclaimed Australian drama The Furnace premiered on 30 November, shining a light on the ‘Afghan’ cameleers during the 1800s gold rushes at its premiere on 30 November.

The Furnace premieres as part of Lotterywest Films Perth Festival from 30 November – 6 December before being available at 110 cinemas around Australia from 10 December 2020.

Year 5 students from Mount Pleasant Primary School were the lucky recipients of an all-expenses paid excursion on the Perth Heart of Gold Discovery Trail last week.

The excursion prize was one of two won at the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia’s HASS Week Conference in July.

Perth's virtual gold trail for Chinese tourism

A year on from the launch of Perth’s virtual Heart of Gold Discovery Trail, a Mandarin translation of the self-guided walking tour will be released at an exclusive first-look event on Friday 30 November.

Gold Industry Group Chairman and Perth Mint CEO Richard Hayes with special guest the Minister for Mines and Petroleum and Asian Engagement the Hon. Bill Johnston MLA, will host leading travel agencies, tourism operators and media to be first to experience the interactive gold adventure in Mandarin via the Heart of Gold Australia app.

Perth’s heart of gold came to life on the weekend as hundreds descended on the city for the Gold Industry Group’s (GIG) annual celebration.

Following the successful launch of Perth’s #heartofgold Discovery Trail in October 2017, a free community event took place in the city to unveil the trail’s reverse option - with new interactive features to uncover.

In 1892, Coolgardie grew into a booming town after prospectors Arthur Bayley and William Ford discovered a rich find of gold nuggets at Fly Flat. Prospectors, gold diggers, mining companies and speculators then followed the gold rush during the roaring nineties in Western Australia.
