NSW students and teachers supported through lockdown

This year more than ever, teachers and students are being faced with the additional challenge of trying to prepare for end of year exams in lockdown. Australian Earth Science Education (AusEarthEd) has responded by providing vital Environmental Science (EES) resources, virtual incursions and webinars. This terrific initiative is helping to support students and teachers across New South Wales, with the backing of their major partner, the Gold Industry Group.

The Gold Industry Group and LIVIN are set to embark on their third national tour in August, to empower students across Australia to speak up and provide much needed practical tools on mental health through more than 80 relatable workshops.

Approximately one in two Australians experience mental ill health over the course of their lifetime and research suggests that less than 50% of people experiencing mental ill health will access professional support.

The Gold Industry Group and member Earth Science Western Australia have united to bring support for Earth and Environmental Science education to New South Wales secondary school students, in an innovative approach through online learning.

This builds on the existing partnership between both organisations, who have been collaborating on furthering gold education since early 2018.

Newcrest creates $20 million Community Support Fund

Newcrest Mining Limited has established a global A$20 million Community Support Fund to provide financial assistance to its host communities to help them face the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Australia, a portion of the fund will be directed to the Orange, Blayney and Cabonne regions in New South Wales and the Telfer region in Western Australia.

Gold Education Program goes national

The Gold Industry Group (GIG)’s school program has expanded to inspire the next generation of gold industry leaders, by providing free, interactive gold demonstrations to primary and secondary students across Australia.

Developed in conjunction with Earth Science Western Australia (ESWA), the one-hour sessions are delivered by passionate gold industry professionals and incorporate STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning through a hands-on activity that replicates common-place scenarios within the gold sector.

The Gold Industry Group’s Women in Gold Great Diversity Debate will be held in Sydney for the first time, as part of a national tour, on Thursday 14 November at Untied.

With an expected crowd of more than 150 guests, the inaugural debate will thrust diversity into the spotlight as a panel of four leading industry speakers take to the stage to explore whether a diversity debate that begins and ends with gender is doomed to fail.

REQ Report: The future looks bright for gold

Australia’s gold exports are forecast to hit a record high of AUD $25 billion in 2019-20 according to the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science’s September edition of Resources and Energy Quarterly (REQ).

The September REQ shows Australia remains the world’s second largest producer of gold, with production increasing by 6.3% in FY 2018–19 to 321 tonnes, equating to 9% of the world’s total supply in 2018.

Gold workers join LIVINWell movement

The Gold Industry Group (GIG)’s recent mental health tour with charity LIVIN is being hailed a success after more than 40 stigma breaking workshops were delivered across Australia reaching more than 1,200 gold industry workers, locals and students.

As a result of the resounding positive feedback from attendees, the tour has been extended with more workshops to be delivered at gold mine sites in June and a school tour is being explored for 2020.
