North Metropolitan TAFE (NMTAFE) amalgamated into one college in 2016 to better prepare the mining workforce of tomorrow and support mining operations.

Offering courses focused on surveying, surface extraction and resource processing, and laboratory operation, together with South Metropolitan TAFE, which is focused on oil and gas, they collectively provide education pathways to the resources industry.

The Gold Industry Group (GIG) hosted its fifth annual networking event on Thursday 27 May at The Perth Mint, reconnecting more than 100 members amongst the glimmering displays of The Perth Mint’s gold exhibition and melt house to share the impact of its latest activities.

Newly appointed GIG Chair and Gold Fields Vice President of Legal and Compliance Kelly Carter opened the evening by acknowledging the start of National Reconciliation Week and welcoming Olman Walley who delivered the Welcome to Country with a captivating digeridoo performance.

Clean energy future for gold

Saracen Mineral Holdings, Norton Gold Fields and Evolution Mining are set to reduce their carbon emissions and create hundreds of jobs from new renewable energy projects in the Goldfields, receiving grants worth more than $2.6 million from the McGowan Government’s $19 million Clean Energy Future Fund.

The projects will create up to 400 jobs and generate 77,000-megawatt house (MWh) of electricity each year, which is enough to power 15,000 houses and save 53,000 tonnes of carbon emissions; the equivalent to taking 17,000 cars off the road.

A team of Norton Gold Fields employees embarked on a thrilling adventure last month, abseiling 40 storeys down Western Australia’s highest single pitch building to raise awareness and much-needed funds for Lifeline WA.

Norton Gold Fields’ raised just over $5,800 in funds for Lifeline WA from Norton Gold Fields, Rivet Mining Services, BKay Pty Ltd, and family and friends.

Discoveries of a WA prospector memorialised

A modern-day prospector and unsung hero of the Eastern Goldfields, Bill Allen is set to be immortalised in a new book ‘No Royalty, No Deal’ by Karl Wolzak, launched this month by the Amalgamated Prospectors and Leaseholders Association (APLA) of Western Australia.

Royce William Allen, better known as Bill, was a Kalgoorlie prospector who during his lifetime discovered gold deposits totalling 45 tonnes in situ and worth almost $3 billion in today’s gold price.

More than 15,000 job seekers descended on the annual SkillsWest Career Expo in Perth earlier this month, where the Gold Industry Group, Newmont Goldcorp Australia, Norton Gold Fields, Macmahon and Ausdrill showcased the sector’s career opportunities.

Held from 16 to 18 August in the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, the expo presented a unique opportunity for job seekers to discover current vacancies and career pathways at over 100 exhibiting organisations.

Exploring life in the Goldfields

The Gold Industry Group (GIG) partnered with the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KBCCI) to deliver its annual community expo, ‘Explore the Goldfields’, showcasing the extensive activities and services available to new and existing residents.

The expo saw 70 stallholders interacting with the public, with some businesses even offering raffles or free gifts.

City shines for St Barbara's Day

Thousands flocked to the centre of Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Sunday for the annual St Barbara’s Day Parade, where colossal mining vehicles rumbled down Hannan Street festooned with mascots, Christmas angels and a couple of famous footy sons.

Now in its 19th year, the festival drew around 15,000 people to celebrate the patron saint of miners and the industry’s contribution to the state’s heritage, economy and community.

The Aboriginal woman who found gold

In 1911, a newly-wed Aboriginal couple found gold in Far North Queensland. The woman became a miner and made history, when she found a new goldfield located near the Batavia River.

Aboriginal people mined the land for ochre and stone long before the First Fleet arrived in Sydney Harbour. As the European gold rushes spread across the country, some Aboriginal people became prospectors too.

Yes, there is a story to be told about the secret goings-on at the Boulder Block Hotel. The underground miners of The Golden Mile were “on the gold”, and some of them were said to be selling the gold on the sly at the infamous pub before the whistle blew for the end of shift.

Norton Gold Fields' Paddington Operations recently won second Best Team Overall in the 2016 Underground Mine Emergency Response Competition held at Northern Star Resources’ Kanowna Belle Gold Mine, Kalgoorlie.

It was an outstanding achievement for the Norton team who takes a company-wide approach to training employees and contractors in emergency response (ER).

Member Norton Gold Fields has made its single biggest donation of $50 000 this year to fund the Goldfields Individual and Family Support Association's Saturday morning program.

The Norton Saturday Morning Club will provide respite for carers of children with various disabilities with the opportunity to participate in a broad range of sporting and recreational activities.
