Australian feature film shines light on pioneering gold rush cameleers

Following its success at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, acclaimed Australian drama The Furnace premiered on 30 November, shining a light on the ‘Afghan’ cameleers during the 1800s gold rushes at its premiere on 30 November.

The Furnace premieres as part of Lotterywest Films Perth Festival from 30 November – 6 December before being available at 110 cinemas around Australia from 10 December 2020.

The 2020 Women in Mining WA (WIMWA) Summit held in September was backed by Gold Industry Group members IGO, Gold Fields, Northern Star Resources and Regis Resources and featured insightful speakers from around the world addressing current challenges experienced by both women and men in the workplace.

This year’s Summit tackled various key topics of workplace culture around diversity, leadership, mental health and adaptivity.

A team of Norton Gold Fields employees embarked on a thrilling adventure last month, abseiling 40 storeys down Western Australia’s highest single pitch building to raise awareness and much-needed funds for Lifeline WA.

Norton Gold Fields’ raised just over $5,800 in funds for Lifeline WA from Norton Gold Fields, Rivet Mining Services, BKay Pty Ltd, and family and friends.

Indigenous role models sought for industry

A powerhouse panel of five leading industry businesswomen shared their insights on Indigenous Relations to a sold-out crowd at the Western Australian Mining Club’s luncheon last month, emphasizing the need for visible role models and a dedicated business council.

It was the Club’s first in-person event to be held since February 2020 due to the State’s COVID-19 restrictions, and was also live-streamed to interstate and international viewers unable to travel into WA.

Gold education program returns

The Gold Industry Group’s National Gold Education Program has recommenced this term, after delivery of its dynamic gold sessions and unique Gold Resources Kits were temporarily postponed due to the national COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Teachers in Western Australia can now book a free gold session for their class, and schools nation-wide can order a free Gold Resources Kit via the online platform.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is one of three essential Western Australian community organisations to receive part of the $9.1 million in funding from WA resources companies, as part of the COVID-19 Community Support Initiative set up by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia.

With the outbreak of COVID-19 across Australia, the RFDS stepped up their support to regional Australians.

The stage was swept by Newmont Goldcorp Australia and Anglogold Ashanti Australia emergency response teams at the 9th annual MERC’s presentation night, taking out overall second and third places along with several scenario wins and the Best Medic award.

As the MERC’s chosen Industry Partner, the Gold Industry Group proudly supported the 2019 Mining Emergency Response Competition (MERC) alongside two gold mining teams and 12 others from across Western Australia including one from Indonesia, as they competed at Langley Park in Perth from 22 to 24 November.

National diversity tour shines bright

The Gold Industry Group’s popular Women in Gold Great Diversity Debate hit the road this year, expanding from its original host city of Perth to both Sydney and Melbourne, with a diverse panel of 12 speakers and hundreds of guests from across the nation joining the #womeningold19 conversation.

Since the GIG’s inaugural event in 2016, the debate has quickly become one of the most influential diversity events on Australia’s mining calendar, this year amplifying the topic three-fold crossing three States.

Diversity debate to reach beyond gender

Now one of the largest and most influential events on the mining industry calendar, the Gold Industry Group’s annual Women in Gold Great Diversity Debate enters its fourth year in Perth, this time exploring whether a diversity debate that begins and ends with gender is doomed to fail.

The contemporary discussions, hosted in conjunction with Women in Mining WA, will once again be held in front of over 300 guests at the historic Perth Mint this Friday night.

IGO are up all night for charity

As Gold Partner, Independence Group will join other businesses and individuals across Perth for the Up All Night marathon next month, raising funds and awareness for Ronald McDonald House Charities Western Australia.

The 42 km walk will commence at 9pm on Saturday 30 November and end at 8am on Sunday 1 December, in solidarity of those families with sick children who experience similar hardship.

Armed with the free Heart of Gold Australia app, West Coast Fever players Stacey Francis, Jhaniele Fowler, Verity Charles and Shannon Eagland learnt the rich history and importance of gold to Australia’s future.

Martu footballers fly high at Optus Stadium

On July 12, Newcrest Mining supported 70 young Martu men to participate in a curtain raiser football match at Perth’s Optus Stadium prior to The AFL Grand Final rematch between Collingwood and the West Coast Eagles.

The young Martu players and support staff travelled several thousand kilometres to Perth from various remote communities in the Pilbara region of WA.
