Year 5 students from Mount Pleasant Primary School were the lucky recipients of an all-expenses paid excursion on the Perth Heart of Gold Discovery Trail last week.

The excursion prize was one of two won at the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia’s HASS Week Conference in July.

City shines for St Barbara's Day

Thousands flocked to the centre of Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Sunday for the annual St Barbara’s Day Parade, where colossal mining vehicles rumbled down Hannan Street festooned with mascots, Christmas angels and a couple of famous footy sons.

Now in its 19th year, the festival drew around 15,000 people to celebrate the patron saint of miners and the industry’s contribution to the state’s heritage, economy and community.

The ‘King of Kalgoorlie’, West Coast Eagles player Dom Sheed, returned to his hometown with Assistant Coach Jaymie Graham, to be presented by Mayor John Bowler with a golden key to the City.

The local sporting heroes were warmly welcomed back to the Goldfields, taking the 2018 AFL Premiership Cup on a victory lap, and making a star appearance in the St Barbara’s Day Parade down Hannan Street on Sunday 2 December.

The Northern Star Resources’ sponsored flag pole in the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Centennial Park is getting a face lift this week, as local Aboriginal artist Jason Dimer completes an intricate design with assistance from year 7 to 10 students as part of the City’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) launch.

The design is a collaboration and is based on story telling the significance of water to the land.

The 2018 ‘100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining’ were announced in London earlier this week by Women in Mining which featured seven of Australia’s gold powerhouse leaders including our very own Vice Chairperson Kelly Carter.

Gold Industry Group members recognised in the top 100 as inspirational role models for future generations of mining women were Gold Fields' Kelly Carter, St Barbara Limited's Meryl Jones, Ausdrill's Alex Atkins, KCGM's Shannon Youd, Newcrest Mining's Gabriela Love and Xiaoling Liu and KPMG’s Denise McComish.

The Gold Industry Group’s third annual Women in Gold Great Diversity Debate at The Perth Mint saw its 300-strong crowd get behind the hashtag #womeningold18 to discuss corporate gender equity targets, sparking a national tour.

Hosted in conjunction with Women in Mining WA, the event recognises and promotes women in the gold mining industry and provides a platform on which to examine gender-related topics through its annual debate, which will take to the national stage in 2019.

Goldfields shines at WASMA ball

All that glittered was gold on Saturday night at the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club, as another year of graduates from the WA School of Mines were celebrated amongst 450 industry representatives at their annual Alumni Ball.

Traditionally held in Perth, hosting the ball for the first time in the Goldfields was the brainchild of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Mayor John Bowler, who wished to align it with the City’s celebration of 125 years since gold was first discovered in the area.

The Aboriginal woman who found gold

In 1911, a newly-wed Aboriginal couple found gold in Far North Queensland. The woman became a miner and made history, when she found a new goldfield located near the Batavia River.

Aboriginal people mined the land for ochre and stone long before the First Fleet arrived in Sydney Harbour. As the European gold rushes spread across the country, some Aboriginal people became prospectors too.
