Gold industry mentors met with Year 10-12 Indigenous leaders to help assist in the planning of future community projects as a part of the annual Shooting Stars Senior Leadership Camp.
Shooting Stars, an initiative of Glass Jar Australia, empowers Aboriginal girls and women across Western and South Australia to make informed choices about their education and employment journey while giving back to their local communities.
Travelling to Perth from all corners of Western Australia alongside one student who had travelled from Whyalla in South Australia.
During this particular workshop, the leaders were tasked with devising an outreach project that was aimed at bringing together members of their community back home to help educate and inspire their local area through culture.
Mentors from Northern Star Resources, Gold Fields, Gold Road Resources, and Ramelius Resources assisted the group by sharing their expertise in development and project management skills to help the students plan and execute their initiatives by terms three and four this year.
While this was the first Leadership camp to take place in two years Shooting Stars Pathway Coordinator Rokiyah Bin Swani was happy that the initiative has returned to an annual event with the help of Gold Industry Group’s (GIG) ongoing support.
“The Senior Leadership camp is about exposing students to different career pathways and empowering them to make positive choices to become role models in their communities,” Bin Swani said.
“We had 24 students from across Western Australia and South Australia come to Perth to attend the week-long camp experience.
“The community project session enabled students to learn project management skills and provide GIG mentors with an understanding of what their communities are like, including both positive experiences and challenges.
“From this session, students came up with ideas of how they wanted to give back to their communities.”
All in all, the session was a huge success as the students successfully devised and started to plan creative initiatives to give back to their local community.

“I want to create a NAIDOC shirt competition to help everyone get creative and start a conversation about the NAIDOC theme ‘For our Elders’”. Shameka (Laverton).
“We want to put on an event with our younger peers in year 5 and 6 to help transition them from primary school to high school. This will help introduce them to the Shooting Stars program and show them that it’s not scary moving into high school. We can be role models for them.” Ana (Hedland)
